The Ups and Downs of Becoming a Game Developer

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

Jeremy Doolin is Assistant Professor of Computer and Information Technology at West Virginia Northern Community College, teaching programming and information security courses. After graduating from Ohio University in 2002, he spent 10 years in the IT and Software Engineering field. In the last few years, he has also become an independent game developer working on his first major project, “Ballad of Thuriana”. Jeremy grew up in the 80s, and has seen and played video games on every generation of console since the Atari 2600, but didn’t think developing his own games was realistic until recently.

Jeremy is also a medievalist as a hobby with a particular interest in the Arthurian legend, and likes to work it into his games and tabletop RPG campaigns. He also loves to teach, share knowledge and inspire others.

Game Engines in Hollywood

[/vc_column_text][vc_text_separator title=”Brad Kalinoski”][vc_column_text]

Brad Kalinoski, grew up in West Virginia believing for the longest time there was no way to fulfill his dream of working in art, film, and entertainment. At first, he thought of completing a career in the medical field, but after almost 10 years working in a 350-bed hospital in Huntington WV, he decided it was not his career choice, and not his dream.

Deciding to take a chance, and as cliche as it sounds, he quit his job in 1995, and with his wife’s blessing, went to buying books of the freshly new amazon.com, studying and creating camera, lighting, color, a demo reel that he and his wife would take with them and set out to find there dreams in Los Angeles. Literally, two weeks after arriving in North Hollywood CA to stay with his friend and wife’s cousin, John Wallace III who was working at Film Roman, (AKA the Simpsons), he landed a job in the Visual Effect industry working with Academy Award-winning Dr. Mark Sagar (Academy of Sciences Academy Award winner) and continued to work with other well-known names in the entertainment industry to a total about 80 plus films and tv shows, and it continues today as Brad finishes work on Kansas City for Amblin Entertainment, Dolly Parton Theater, and some other surprises that are coming.

Brad took that chance of moving to California where at that time, everything happened in the entertainment industry, to pursue his dream and his love of working in the entertainment industry as a digital VFX artist, producer, and someday, director.

Today Brad is the head of studio for FuseFX, working in Visual Effect as VFX Supervisor, Producer, and as an artist, and who has been nominated for a BAFTA Award for his work on Black Swan, and nominated for two VES Awards (Black Swan and Lost the final season) as compositing supervisor. Has worked on some of the largest shows in feature and episodic history and shows that have won Emmys and academy awards and Bafta’s. And shows such as recently as The Georgetown Project, Black Lightning, Dolly Parton heartstrings, The Walking Dead Season Eight.

Today Brad continues his work as the head of studio for FuseFX, www.fusefx.com, Atlanta GA office, where he is building, creating and developing to create Atlanta’s largest VFX Company supporting the film, episodic and streaming industry.

[/vc_column_text][vc_text_separator title=”Brien Goodrich”][vc_column_text]

Brien’s work is inspired by contrasts – Intimate stories juxtaposed against expansive worlds, inciting a central question: What happens when the ‘ordinary’ collides with the ‘fantastic’? Brien is the former Cinematic Director for HALO and his directorial work has landed him squarely at the convergence of actor performance, virtual production, CG animation and real time engines. Each of these mediums represent fusions between the real world and the fantastic – collisions of technology and storytelling.

For Halo 4 and 5, Brien directed more than 120 minutes of both real-time and pre-rendered cinematics, completing virtual production, post and VFX work in the US, Poland, Hungary and the UK. Additionally, Brien has had the opportunity to direct diverse talent ranging from Mike Colter to Nathan Fillion to Samuel L. Jackson. Brien has been a panelist at San Diego Comicon, presented at Siggraph and had his work featured as an official selection for Siggraph’s Electronic Theater. In 2013, Brien was nominated by the Visual Effects Society for Outstanding Real-Time Visuals in a Video Game. In 2016, he received a second VES nomination for Outstanding Visuals in a Real-Time Project.
